Gifts For Terrier Owners

There are many types of terrier which fall into several main groups with each group having several different breeds. Most of the breeds were developed in the UK where they were used to control rats, rabbits and foxes both over and under the ground. In fact, the name terrier is from the Latin "terra", meaning earth, in reference to the dogs going underground.

Today, most terriers are kept as companion dogs and family pets. They are generally loyal and affectionate to their owners but can be "big characters" requiring a firm hand. The types of terriers mostly fall into the categories of working, toy and Bull type terriers. The working terriers include Jack Russells and Patterdale Terriers. Toy terriers are bred down from larger terriers and breeds include English Toy Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers. Although small, they are not true lap dogs due to retaining most of their true terrier characteristics. Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier are examples of Bull type terriers.
