Gifts For Setter Owners

The setter is a breed of gun dog originally used for hunting. In the UK the family contains four breeds whereas the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs only recognise three. They include Irish Red, White, English and Gordon setters. Show-bred dogs are usually heavier and larger than field-bred dogs.

Their hunting technique gave rise to their name. A setter silently searches for game by scent, hunting systematically and methodically. When prey is encountered the dog freezes rather than chasing after the game. Setters get their name from their distinctive stance, a sort of crouch or "set" upon finding their quarry. Since the scent of game birds is airborne, a setter will carry its head well up and not follow ground tracks.

Probably originating from spaniels in Spain, the breed is thought to have evolved in the 15th century in the UK. They combine beauty, speed and brains with the purpose of finding game birds.

Due to their long silky coats, setters require some maintenance. They tend to be happy playful dogs which are usually friendly to both people and other dogs. As most owners will know, they require regular daily exercise due to their amount of energy.
